From Rick Steves' Guidebook: "1,200 years ago Charlemagne besieged this town, then called La Cité, for several years. Just as the town was running out of food, Madame Carcas (portrayed in this statue) fed the last bits of grain to the last pig, and then threw him out over the city wall. Surprised that the town could afford to throw fat party pigs over the wall, Charlemagne's tired army decided they would never succeed in starving the people out. They ended the siege and the city was saved. Madame Carcas sounded the victory bells. The French word for the verb "to sound" is "sonner", and hence the city got a new name ... Carcas-sonne."
